DESCRIPTION
The Thiefbug, Model TX-BUG1 is a Powerline Carrier Transmitter, used to prevent the theft of electronic items that are intended to remain plugged into an AC power outlet. The Thiefbug detects when the item is disconnected (unplugged or power cord cut) from the AC power outlet, and uses the
existing AC power wiring to send a coded Alarm signal to Cepco Receivers or Display Panels, that identifies the Transmitters location.
The Units contain DIP switches for the selection of individual location codes. Click on Coding The Thiefbug does not affect, nor is it affected by, the operation and use of the item being protected. The Model TX-BUG1, Thiefbug, which is both the detector and transmitter, is installed in the electrical outlet box, behind the duplex socket, where it cannot be seen or detected. Installation is easy; all you need is a screwdriver. Installation instructions are included with each Thiefbug.
The unit is solidly encased in a rock hard epoxy compound. It measures 2.2 inches, by 1.2 inches, by 1/2 inch, and weighs less than 2 oz. They are supplied with 2-sided tape on the back for quick and easy installation. The Thiefbug is automatically armed when the item to be protected is plugged into the socket. Then, when this item is unplugged (or disconnected in any way), The Thiefbug sends its coded Alarm signal over the existing AC power wiring to the monitoring unit(s). The Thiefbug will continue to signal for approximately one minute, then time out and stop. It rearms automatically when an item is plugged in again. The Monitor and Display Panels lock in Alarm mode, displaying the location code until manually Reset. The Receiver Modules will reset automatically within 5 seconds after the Thiefbug stops transmitting. The Schematic Diagram of the Thiefbug is shown below.
HOW THE THIEFBUG WORKS Modern electronic equipment, including PCs, Macs, VCRs, TVs, (Notebooks and Laptops while they are being charged), etc., draw a small amount of current anytime they are connected to an AC power outlet, even when they are turned OFF. This current, which may be as little as 0.5 milliamps, is required for such features as real time clocks, memory, remote controls, etc. The Thiefbug detects the presence of this current when an item is plugged in and Arms itself. Then, when it detects the absence of this current flow, it sends the Alarm signal, sensing that the equipment has now been disconnected.
The Thiefbug will time out and stop after about one minute. It is rearmed automatically when another item is plugged into the power outlet. When the Thiefbug is installed in the outlet box, it will Arm only one of the duplex sockets (you select which one at the time you install it). The other socket is a normal AC power outlet that is unaffected by the Thiefbug. This allows free use of this socket for lamps or other things. Only one item can be plugged into each armed socket.
